A token is a unit of text that a language model processes internally, typically representing a word, part of a word, or punctuation mark. Text input and output are broken into tokens by a tokenizer before the model performs any computation, and the total number of tokens processed affects both response time and cost. Different languages and character sets can tokenize at different rates, so the same sentence may consume more or fewer tokens depending on the language used.
